A Mozambican citizen living in Germany has died of Covid-19, the Ministry of Health announced yesterday. The deceased had been living in Germany since the 1980s, National Director of Public Health Rosa Marlene said during a press Covid-19 update, without further elaboration.
This is the first death of a Mozambican registered by the authorities, who are currently trying to ascertain the nationality of another victim, who lived in Mozambique for a long time and died in England, also of Covid-19.
On Tuesday, for the second consecutive day, Mozambique saw no increases in the number of Covid-19 cases, the total remaining at 39 registered cases, since the first was announced on March 22.
According to the Ministry of Health, of the 39 positive cases, 31 are of local transmission and eight are imported, with 1,163 people tested since the first case. Recoveries stand at eight, so Mozambique has 31 active cases.
By Tuesday, according to the latest pandemic statistics on the continent, the number of deaths caused by Covid-19 in Africa had risen to 1,158, with more than 23,000 registered cases of the disease in 52 countries.
Among Portuguese-speaking African countries, Equatorial Guinea leads in number of infections (79), followed by Cape Verde (67 cases and one death), Guinea-Bissau (50) and Angola (24 infected and two dead). São Tomé and Príncipe remains without cases, after a first identification of four positive cases was contradicted by follow-up tests.
Globally, according to an AFP report, the Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 172,500 deaths and infected more than 2.5 million people in 193 countries and territories.
More than 558,000 patients are considered fully recovered.
