The Mozambican National Defense and Security Council on Wednesday urged defense forces to raise security levels in Cabo Delgado after attacks on remote communities in the province.
“The National Defense and Security Council reiterate the need for strong action by the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) with a view to raising the level of protection of populations and their property against the barbarities of evildoers,” according to a note from the Mozambican presidency distributed to the press.
Since May 27 at least 29 people, 11 alleged attackers and two members of the security forces have died in the latest wave of violence.
The note said that the council, which met yesterday, analyzed the attacks in the province of Cabo Delgado in depth, and considers it urgent that the situation returns to normal.
“The body urges the FDS to continue to support the population in rebuilding their homes and an environment of public order and security,” the note reads, while also calling on communities to redouble their vigilance and denounce any action threatening the safety of the region.
On Friday night, an armed group attacked the remote village of Maganja in northern Mozambique, killing five people and burning 120 houses as well as looting the village.
The attacks come at a time when work is under way to exploit natural gas in Cabo Delgado, with production involving some of the world’s major oil companies expected to start in four to six years.
