Mozambican Defence Minister Atanásio Salvador Mtumuke begins a working visit to India today, during which he will sign a protocol boosting maritime security.
Illegal fishing off the Mozambican coast costs the country about US$60 million (€54.5 million) annually, according to the Ministry of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries.
“The visit aims to review bilateral cooperation in the field of defence and to sign the specific protocol on the Promotion of Maritime Security in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mozambique,” a statement from the Mozambican Ministry of Defence reveals.
During the five-day visit, the Mozambican Defence Minister is expected to hold a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is accompanied on his visit by members of the ministry and Armed Defence Forces officers.
“The visit is part of the strengthening of friendship and cooperation relations between the two countries, and following the consensus reached during the visit of the Minister of Defence of the Republic of India to Mozambique, in July of this year,” the ministry briefing adds.
Mozambique and India have recently expressed interest in boosting relations. Trade between the two countries reached about €1.7 million in 2018, up from €1.5 million the year before, but there is still room for growth, former High Commissioner of India in Mozambique Rudra Gaurav Shresth said in an interview with Lusa in February.
Coal, cashews and beans are among Mozambique’s main exports to India.
