Mozambican civil society organizations have distanced themselves from pamphlets calling for protests over public debt on 29 and 30 April, Mozambican newswebsite Folha de Maputo (FM) reported yesterday in a ‘Breaking News’ article.
Some of the ads calling for demonstrations were attributed to civil society organizations that have headed such campaigns before, such as the Human Rights League (Liga dos Direitos Humanos), FORCOM and the Women’s Forum (Fórum Mulher), reports FM.
According to a source close to these organizations cited by Folha de Maputo, no civil society organization has called for demonstrations, and the source has attributed the calls to “malicious people seeking legitimacy for sowing chaos”.
“When we call for a demonstration, we always call the press and announce the route of the protest from start to finish. Not having done so, this is nothing but some people trying to gain benefit,” said the same unidentified source.
The Police of the Republic of Mozambique announced in Maputo on Monday that it would not tolerate illegal demonstrations that put the public tranquillity at risk.
