Mozambican actress Filomena Remigio passed away in the city of Inhambane on Monday as a result of illness.
Filomena Remigio played the leading role in the first fiction film by Sol de Carvalho, ‘The Widow’s Inheritance’, for which she won the Best Actress Prize at the Linha da Frente Festival and the Acting Prize at the Festival of Vila Nova de Famalicão.
During her cinema career, the actress starred with Gigliola Zacara in ‘Another Man’s Garden’, and was the protagonist in another Sol de Carvalho film, Mabata Bata, where she played opposite Horácio Guiamba.
Sol de Carvalho, who was also a personal friend, was recently working with the actress on a documentary about the Kutchinga ritual, shot in the Inhambane neighbourhood where she lived.
“It was amazing how well she managed to interpret the characters she played in three different languages: Xitswa, Changana and Portuguese. She was endlessly accommodating, and never failed to remain a humble and hardworking person. On set, she was available for as many takes as were necessary until we were satisfied. Remígio was a great example for those who lacked formal academic or professional training,” a statement from the director on the actress’s death reads.
Filomena Remígio was also a member of a singing and dancing group in the city of Inhambane.
