Christians across Mozambique celebrated Palm Sunday with calls for peace, stability and socio-economic development.
In Zambezia province, Catholics in Quelimane appealed to Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama to accept the invitation to dialogue and bring to an end the political and military crisis existing in some parts of the country.
“We pray day and night for calm to reigns among us; We ask God to help these people; We want peace, not war,” are among the prayers raised this year.
Palm Sunday marks the end of Lent and the beginning of the Holy Week, and is celebrated with the distribution of palm crosses at Mass. The day commemorates Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, hailed as Messiah by the people, who threw cloaks and palm fronds branches on the his path.
Palm Sunday takes place a week before the celebration of Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday.
