Algeria defeat Mozambique 5-1 in World Cup qualifiers

Mozambican chess players participating in the 2021 African Individual Chess Championships in Lilongwe, Malawi, are presenting encouraging results after Day Two of the event.
The biggest chess event on the African continent also qualifies the top players for the 2021 Chess World Cup to be held in Sochi, Russia, from 10 July to 3 August.
Mozambican chess player Wilton Calicoca debuted at the event with a victory against Gwezere Cecil (Zimbabwe), and a defeat against Kayonde Andrew (Zimbabwe).
Mozambique’s national champion, Donaldo Paiva, also had a good start. He won his first game against Senegalese Wane Al Hassane, but lost the second to Bwalya Gillan, from Zambia.
Person Abrantes started with a defeat against Bwalya Gillan from Zambia but came back in the second round with an important victory against Senegales Wane Al Hassane.
National champion, Vânia Vilhete, has yet to lose, with a victory and a draw. She beat Mpingangira Ellen from Malawi and drew with Bostwana’s Banda Katlo.
The Mozambican Chess Federation team’s visit to Lilongwe is supported by the Secretariat of State for Sports through the Sports Promotion Fund.
