Mozambican boxers Alcinda Panguana and Armando Sigaúque clinched gold medals on Sunday at the Mandela African Boxing Cup held in Durban, South Africa. Alcinda Panguana (70kg) defeated Temalangeni Dlamini from eSwatini by technical knockout.
The referee stopped the fight one minute and forty seconds after it began due to the physical incapacity of Alcinda Panguana’s opponent.
The Mozambican boxer once again proved her dominance in the Southern African region. Panguana secured two significant medals within a month. Last month, the most decorated national boxer won a silver medal at the African Games held in Accra, the capital of Ghana.
The South African competition served as preparation for Alcinda Panguana for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Like Deisy Nhanquila, the young boxer is one of the athletes who has already secured qualification for the biggest global sports event. As part of her preparation, Panguana may participate in more events to continue her training.
On the other hand, Armando Sigaúque (57kg) faced a tough challenge. The young boxer had to engage in a close fight to defeat Amzolele Dyeyi from South Africa by 3-2 in a split decision by the judges. The Mozambican boxer has been representing the country well in international competitions in recent years.
Armando Sigaúque is preparing for the final Olympic qualification window, which will take place in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, at the end of May.
