Mozambican maritime surveillance has seized 1,100 kilograms of crab in the centre of the country in less than a week, suspected of being caught during the closed season when it is prohibited to catch the species, authorities told Lusa on Monday.
The last seizure was carried out on Saturday, when authorities discovered a vessel with 600 kilograms of crab on board.
“We are apprehending the crab and the boats, and those responsible face heavy fines if they are caught,” head of fisheries’ inspection in Sofala César Mapossa explained.
The crew abandoned the boat, anchored on the outskirts of the city of Beira, in central Mozambique, when they noticed the imminent arrival of the inspectors on Saturday.
The vessel was confiscated and the crabs later returned to their natural habitat via the mangrove of the Maria River, outside of Beira, the provincial capital of Sofala.
The seizure occurred less than a week after the authorities discovered another 500 kilograms of crab caught during the closed season, which began in September and runs until the end of the year.
Closed seasons maintain sustainable stocks of marine species by giving them a period without capture for numbers to recover.
