While the sector may be affected by the lack of foreign exchange, rumours circulating in Maputo about an impending shortage of fuel as a result of the serious economic situation facing the country are groundless, officials say.
Managers of petrol and diesel filling stations contacted by VOA, however, said that business was normal.
Pedro Francisco, manager of a filling station in Khongolote, on the outskirts of Maputo, said that he heard the rumours and believed they arose from the country’s difficult economic situation. But some analysts say the fuel sector is bound to be affected by the shortage of foreign exchange for imports eventually.
João Macandza, the director of Mozambican fuel importer Imopetro, which is jointly owned by all licensed petrol stations operating in Mozambique, warns however that “such rumours have no foundation and serve only to create panic”.
