Bread price hike in Mozambique: 'Keeping quiet to avoid social unrest' - CanalMoz
More than 120 businesspeople and representatives from Canada and Mozambique were present for the first ever Canada-Mozambique Business Forum on Thursday, a Maputo event designed to stimulate business links and investment and strengthen trade relations between the two countries.
Representatives from colleges and universities from the Canadian province of Alberta, centre of the Canadian oil and gas industry, also participated.
According to the Canadian High Commissioner in Maputo, Shawn Barber, his country wants to help Mozambique train a generation of skilled workers for the oil and gas industry.
Speaking at the forum launch, Barber said: “This morning [Wedneday February 17] we have organized a meeting with private sector partners and the Mozambican government to explore opportunities for collaboration in the development of skills with these institutions that are among the best in the world in professional and vocational training.”
Besides oil and gas, the Canada-Mozambique forum discussed procurement, infrastructure, education and mining.
The first half of the forum was centered around the mining sector, with presentations on the latest developments by Vale, Anadarko and the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company.
Carlos Mesquita, Minister of Transport and Communications of Mozambique, was invited to inaugurate the forum with a presentation on the country’s infrastructure sector.
The second half of the forum focused on infrastructure and energy projects in Mozambique with presentations by companies such as Hydroelectrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) and the National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH).
The meeting ended with the presentation on Canadian technical and financial capacities in Africa, with companies and institutions such as Export Development Canada, the Southern Alberta Institute for Technology and Kentz Engineering, group member of SNC-Lavalin participating.
The event was organized by the Canadian High Commission in partnership with the Canada-Mozambique Business Council.
