It has transpired that two children were injured as a result of the Mozambican Air Force plane crashing in the grounds of a primary school in Maputo’s Hulene neighbourhood last Friday.
On Friday, when the air force plane crashed, it was thought that only one person – one of the aircraft’s occupants – was injured, but ‘O País’ has since established that two children were injured in the accident.
The victims were on their way to school on the day of the event, school director Arsénio Mangue confirmed.
“We just received the information, that same Friday, that two children, who were coming to join the 10 o’clock shift, contracted minor injuries outside the grounds, when one of the plane’s wheels ended up injuring one child’s leg,” he related.

One of the children is a seven-year-old boy, who contracted injuries to his arm and feels pain in parts of his head. This is the child’s recollection of what happened to him that Friday.
“I was going to school and then the plane arrived, broke through the school wall, and hit me. I fell to the ground, then I got up and ran home. Right now, my arm hurts and here in my head,” he said.
Farruque Matola and Lucinda Manhiça, the parents of the child, learned what happened through a family source, and say they experienced moments of panic and despair.
“We were waiting, on that Friday and on Saturday, but they only showed up yesterday, Sunday, and took the child to the hospital for treatment,” the child’s father said.
The mother says that, despite having already received medical care, the victim is not being properly monitored.
“I don’t know if they want to compensate only the one who was injured, along with the plane [occupant], leaving the children aside, because they did provide assistance. They accompanied the child […], they came to give us pills here at home and to see the house, but in financial terms, they still haven’t given us to buy anything the boy might need,” she outlined.
Mavalane General Hospital in Maputo confirmed the child attended the unit’s emergency services, but Patrícia Nhatitima, director of Emergency Services, said that the boy was not in any danger.
The Ministry of National Defence however mentioned only one injured person, one of the plane’s occupants, but said it is working on clarifying the matter, promising further details in the days to come.
