More than one million children are involved in various types of child labour in the country, according to non-governmental organisation (NGO) World Vision.
According to the NGO, in Mozambique, the worst forms of child labour include prostitution, tobacco and sugar cane production, pesticide handling, fishing net trawling, illegal mining, weaving, home-made beverages, construction, transport of people or cargo, exposure to radiation and informal trade.
“Many children continue to see their human rights violated by adults for various economic purposes,” says Marta Maté, National Director of Labour.
This is “a situation that can be minimised with the denunciation of these practices that are harmful to the normal development of children”, Mate contends.
Maté underlines that, nonetheless, most children used for child labour “are not on the list of [involved in] the worst forms”.
