In January of this year, the National Migration Service (SENAMI) registered 624 cases of Mozambicans losing their passports, against 79 in the same period last year.
SENAMI spokesman Celestino Matsinhe told reporters in Maputo yesterday that the location reporting the highest number of losses are the city of Maputo, with 385 cases, Maputo province with 170 and Gaza, with 37 cases.
“Because of the high number of passport losses, SENAMI appeals to citizens who own a passport or other travel document to keep it safe, and to carry it with them only when necessary,” he said.
“In case of loss, the holder should promptly report the matter to the nearest law enforcement authorities and also communicate it to SENAMI. They may request a second copy of the lost document if they so wish,” Matsinhe added.
The SENAMI spokesman said that most passports were not lost during a trip where it was necessary to display that document, because at the same time the holders lost other identification documents, such as their identity card.
“We advise nationals to take their passport with them only if necessary. Yes, your passport is an identification document, but it is also a travel document par excellence, and it does not make much sense for the citizen to leave the house with both their passport and ID if they are not going to travel,” Matsinhe said.
