More than 5,000 Mozambican citizens were deported from the Republic of South Africa in the first half of 2025, according to information released by the National Migration Service (SENAMI).
Of the 5,012 citizens deported, 4,866 were repatriated for irregular immigration, 143 had been detained for illegal mining, 42 for involvement in robbery gangs and 11 for physical assault. Four were accused of homicide, four of smuggling, and six of domestic violence.
Among the 5,012 deported, 253 were women.
The majority of these deportees are from Gaza province, followed by Manica, Inhambane, Sofala, and Maputo provinces, with a small number from other parts of the country.
SENAMI spokesperson for Maputo province, Carmen Mazenga, expressed the authorities’ growing concern regarding the increase in the number of repatriations, going on to
emphasize the urgent need to strengthen border control measures and speed up document issuing to mitigate the phenomenon.
