More than 500 families evacuated from Caia due to threat of floods – Rádio Moçambique

More than 500 families in Caia district in Sofala province have been evacuated due to the threat of flooding on the Zambezi river following water discharges from the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric dam.

Local authorities are asking residents to leave risk areas voluntarily.

Among those evacuated are farmers cultivating the banks of the Zambezi river and its small islands, which are always affected by the flood waters.

Caia district administrator, Nobre dos Santos, said that the district is on high alert, and that everything possible is being done to avoid the loss of human lives.

“We are monitoring [levels] daily because some people, who claim that they live from fishing, head to the river and riverside areas even though they know about the discharges, putting themselves at risk,” Santos said.

In addition to Caia, discharges from the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric plant also threaten the districts of Chemba and Marromeu with flooding.
