More than half of the female students surveyed in a study say they were sexually harassed at school, according to a study carried out in primary and secondary schools in the country.
The study presented in Maputo covered a sample of 1,200 students from the provinces of Gaza, Manica and Nampula, more than half of whom are have confirmed to have been harassed by a teacher.
The research was conducted by the Learning and Training Centre of Civil Society ( Centro de Aprendizagem e Capacitação da Sociedade Civil), in partnership with the Government, because this is considered one of the causes of school dropout of girls.
“The cases are worrisome. In our research work with the students, more than half said they have been harassed. Our recommendation is that all living forces in society come together and reflect together on the welfare of the girl,” said the representative of the institution that implemented the research.
The Josina Machel Secondary School, where the study was presented, acknowledges the existence of harassment of the students.
