More than 4,000 public and private companies owe a combined six hundred million meticais [around US$10 million at current exchange rates] to the National Institute of Social Security (INSS) in workers contributions not paid into the system.
The information was advanced by the president of the INSS, Francisco Mazoio, in Maputo on International Labour Day.
“The contribution debt at this moment amounts to six hundred million meticais. This is worrying. The great appeal that I would like to leave here is for all employers to regularly channel the workers’ contributions to the INSS, because it is good for our workers, in that we take on the responsibilities and release the company from social expenses costs,” Mazoio said.
Most of the companies which owe the social security system money are in the security sector.
