More than 3,000 people were affected by bad weather over the turn of the year in Gaza province, southern Mozambique, a spokesman for the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) said on Tuesday.
“The province of Gaza was worst affected, and we have also registered about 623 different infrastructures damage over the New Year period,” Paulo Tomás told a press conference in Maputo.
In total, 3,213 people were affected in the province, and the INGC has already activated mechanisms for the assistance of these populations, the spokesman said.
“There is an indication of continued rainfall throughout the country. We are aware of this,” he said, adding that there were no weather-related deaths during the period in review.
In addition to Gaza, Tete and Zambézia in central Mozambique were also affected by bad weather during the year, with 220 people affected in both provinces.
Bad weather in Mozambique since the end of October caused eight deaths, with authorities posting an orange alert to intensify monitoring and readiness.
The INGC needs 1 billion meticais (more than EUR 14 million) to meet current rainy season needs.
Mozambique is routinely hit by floods between October and April as a result of its location downstream of most of southern Africa’s watersheds. Paradoxically, the south of the country regularly experiences prolonged droughts.
