A total of 317 Mozambicans were deported from South Africa between 6 and 12 November, mostly for illegal immigration, the National Migration Service of Mozambique (SENAMI) has announced.
Of the total, 296 were deported for illegal immigration, 17 for theft, two for physical assault and the remaining two for drug trafficking, SENAMI spokesman Celestino Matsinhe told reporters at the weekly press conference on Thursday.
According to the authorities, the deported Mozambicans, of whom 309 are men and eight are women, are from Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane in the south of the country, Manica, Sofala and Zambézia in the centre, and Nampula and Niassa in the north of Mozambique.
The SENAMI spokesperson called on Mozambicans to comply with immigration formalities.
Many young Mozambicans experiencing poverty in rural areas in the south of the country emigrate to South Africa illegally in search of better living conditions in the neighbouring country, which has one of the most developed economies on the continent.
