A total of 214,909 young people registered for military service across the country this year, according to data released yesterday in Maputo at the opening of the Second National Seminar on Organization and Operation of the Provincial Recruitment and Mobilization Centres.
The registration figures in Maputo correspond to 126.42 percent of the number initially planned for 2016 – 170,000 of those born in 1998.
With a total of 30,119 young people registering, the city of Maputo provided more young people than any other place (158.5 percent of the expected 19,000), followed by Zambezia province, with 26,205 (154.15 percent of the 17,000 planned).
The third largest enrolment recorded was in the country most populous province, Nampula, with 20,489 young people registering, 120.52 percent of the 17,000 originally planned.
Maputo Province, with 19,730 (158.52 percent); Inhambane, with 19,179 (119.87 percent); Manica, with 19,122 (119.51 percent); Sofala, with 17,347 (108.42 percent); Cabo Delgado, with 16,029 (114.49 percent); Tete, with 15,647 (104.31 percent); and Niassa, with 15,569 (129.74 percent), followed in the list.
Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Minister of National Defence Atanásio Salvador Ntumuke said that the provincial recruitment centres must continually raise levels of performance and professionalism in the service they provide to citizens eligible for military service.
Registration for military census took place countrywide from 2 January to 2 February 29.
