A total of 2,213 Mozambican citizens were repatriated from South Africa across the Ressano Garcia border from January to September of this year, plus another 78 in October alone.
According to ?Jornal Domingo? those involved were serving prison sentences in South African for various crimes, particularly poaching, illegal possession of firearms and theft. Most of them had benefited from pardons within the scope of Covid-19 prison decongestion measures.
These figures were made public last Tuesday by Pedro Pene, head of the Ressano Garcia border post, during a visit by deputies of the Assembly of the Republic’s Commission on International Relations and Cooperation.
Speaking at the same meeting, the chairperson of the parliamentary commission, Catarina Dimande, expressed concern about the lack of transport constraining the effective patrolling of the border area on the Mozambican side.
