One hundred and eighty-three Mozambicans pardoned in South Africa, where they were serving prison sentences, were repatriated yesterday, within the framework of decongesting jails in the neighbouring country to reduce the spread of Covid-19.
South Africa has 276,242 positive Covid-19 and has registered more than 4,000 deaths.
The group was received at the border of Ressano Garcia, Maputo province, in an operation led by the National Migration Service in coordination with teams from the health sector, the Police the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) and the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC).
The returnees’ final destinations include the city and province of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala, Manica and Zambezia.
Pedro Pene, Head of the Ressano Garcia Crossing Post, said that everyone underwent a disinfection and hand hygiene process and was subjected to Covid-19 testing by the health team, who also took their addresses and contacts for follow-up in case any samples came back positive.
The returnees also underwent registration to ascertain the type of crime of which they were accused in South Africa, in order to assess whether or not they were also wanted by the Mozambican justice authorities.
The returnees received kits of basic necessities, since they will have to observe a period of mandatory quarantine at their final destinations.
