Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party has suspended its Maputo Provincial First Secretary, Lote Maueia, according to a report in Monday’s issue of the independent daily “O Pais”.
The Party’s Political Commission took the decision, and informed the Maputo Provincial Committee of Frelimo at the opening of an extraordinary session of the Committee last Friday.
Political Commission member, Eduardo Mulembue, who is also head of the Frelimo disciplinary body, the Verification Commission, announced the suspension of Maueia.
“It was a sovereign decision of the leadership of our Party”, he said. The Political Commission decided to suspend Maueia, “after analysing the performance of our Party’s provincial leadership. We want to stabilise the performance and functioning of our Party”.
“The leadership thought there was something that was not going well, and so it decided to proceed in accordance with the Statutes, and suspend Comrade Secretary Lote from his duties”, added Mulembue.
Lote Maueia has been Maputo first secretary since September 2015. Mulembue gave no specific reason for his removal, and did not mention what he has done, or failed to do, which prompted the Political Commission to suspend him.
The meeting, which ran throughout the weekend, was intended to prepare the Frelimo Maputo Provincial Conference, scheduled for 9-11 June, which will elect a new Provincial Committee as well as delegates to the 11th Party Congress, to be held in late September.
