President Filipe Nyusi says he stands behind efforts to create more jobs for young Mozambicans, who represent over 70 percent of the population and number about 25 million.
The head of state was speaking on Monday in Maputo at the launch of the National Conference of Validation of the Employment Policy Preliminary Project , a one-day meeting to discuss job opportunities in Mozambique.
“This is another meeting that will enable the creation of jobs for Mozambicans,” the president said, backing industrialization as a way to give more people the opportunity to enter the labor market.
“The globalization of the economy has caused and continues to cause socio-economic and political impact on the world of work, challenging societies,” he added.
According to President Nyusi, advances in technology have made it necessary for companies to increase productivity.
“In this context, companies are challenged to become more competitive by investing in human capital and technological innovation as well as in work process innovation and business management,” the president said.
According to Nyusi, as the world evolves, people are challenged to realise the new realities that the labour market offers.
“Over 70 percent of our population are young people under 35 years of age, so this segment represents real potential for the country and must be found jobs,” he said, adding that employment underpins the quality of life of the entire population.
President of the National Youth Council Manuel Formiga said that the preliminary project under discussion must be able to address the current levels of unemployment affecting Mozambique.
“There are still difficulties in getting jobs, with people lacking technical skills in some areas,” Formiga said. “We hope that the preliminary project engenders results for our youth.”
The draft was prepared by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security using new statistics on the labour market, and proposes new strategies mitigating current levels of unemployment in the country.
After discussion, the draft will be submitted to parliament for consideration
