Mozambique sets annual growth target at 5.5% in five-year plan

The city of Maputo recorded a general price increase of around 0.67 percent in January this year. The general rise in prices was significantly influenced by food and non-alcoholic drinks and education, two sectors which contributed to the total monthly inflation with around 0.35 and 0.20 percentage points (pp) respectively.
The National Institute of Statistic Consumer Price Index for Maputo City notes that prices in secondary education, Grades 8 to 10, rose 44.2 percent, the largest increase.
The price of coconut increased by 26.4 per cent, private primary education (first cycle) 17 per cent, photocopies 40 per cent, complete meals in restaurants 0.5 per cent, chicken eggs 6.6 per cent and public 2nd cycle secondary education (pre-university) 41.5 percent. These products contributed to total monthly inflation with about 0.67pp.
Tomato prices, second-hand motor vehicles and private higher education have offset the general trend of falling prices, rising 11.4 per cent, 2.3 per cent and 4.6 per cent, respectively.
The data for the month under analysis, when compared to the same period of 2017, indicate that the Maputo City registered annual inflation of 6.33 percent. Health costs. alcohol and tobacco were most affected, rising around 17.80 percent and 13.40 percent, respectively.
The city of Beira registered monthly inflation of 0.16 percent. Food and non-alcoholic beverages contributed 0.22 pp, while fresh fish increased 5.7 percent, cabbage 10.4 percent, dry shrimp 6.0 percent, lettuce 20.5 percent, goat’s meat 4.6 percent, private higher education 4.9 percent, and onions 3.4 percent. These contributed to the total monthly inflation of about 0.44 pp.
In relation to the same period of 2017, the city of Beira recorded a year-on-year inflation of 0.11 percent. The education and health sectors stand out with increases of 26.47 percent, and 24.59 percent respectively .
