The day after President Nyusi visited the alternative bridge over the Montepuez River, in response to the bridge’s collapse in December, the infrastructure was again under water. Meanwhile, the mobile metal bridges bought by the government as a “solution” to the challenge of access during the rainy season, have not yet arrived in Cabo Delgado Province.
The districts of Macomia, Mueda, Muidumbe, Nangade, Palma, Mocímboa da Praia, Quissanga, Meluco and Ibo are still isolated by road from the rest of the province following the collapse of a section of the bridge over the Montepuez River on 28 December.
The governmental solution was the construction of an alternative route that would allow vehicles of up to 10 tons to cross the river next to the collapsed bridge. Over the weekend, this provisional infrastructure saw pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles make the crossing, and was visited by the Mozambican president.
However, on Monday (27), the waters of the Montepuez River again submerged the two short metallic bridges traversing the heaps of stones and rubble.
Meanwhile, the movable metal bridges, 45 and 75 meters long by 5 meters wide, and bought by the Government as a “solution” to road access during the rainy season, have not yet arrived in Cabo Delgado Province.
