Monkeys and wild boars are destroying maize, manioc and sweet potatoes crops in Calanga administrative post, Manhiça district, Maputo province, even to the extent of creating panic in some areas.
Reports to local authorities claim that these two species have so far destroyed nearly six hectares of crops in the villages of Xécua, Xichonguile and Lagoa Paty, head of the Calanga administrative post, Juvenal Sigaúque, says.
“As regards the monkeys, we encourage communities to set up scarecrows, small dolls and plastic bags to deter the animals. Regarding wild boars, some hunters are setting up traditional traps,” he said.
