The Niassa government and partners are planning to intensify honey production next year by making modern bee hives available to producers in all the province’s nature conservation areas. According to Governor Arlindo Chilundo, the initiative aims to transform Niassa into a producer of quality honey in industrial quantities, not only for the domestic market but also for export.
Honey has been a major source of income for disadvantaged families in Niassa province recently, particularly in Mecula and Mavago districts, where most honey is produced. In fact, a group of young people from Niassa recently travelled to Sofala province to train in modern techniques for the production of honey, a popular product worldwide.
“The production of honey will make communities stop burning off vegetation, which damages the ecosystem in conservation areas and kills fauna,” said Chilundo, asking community leaders and civil society to commit themselves to nature conservation.
Addressing Nova Madeira residents in Sanga district, the Niassa governor appealed for greater vigilance in the conservation of natural resources as the property of all the Mozambicans. He said that the honey produced in Niassa was pure and natural and listed its various advantages, among them consumption by the people and medical applications.
Chilundo announced that the modern hives had arrived in the province, along with honey processing machinery capable of processing 150 litres every two hours, against the current 100 litres per day.
Industrial honey production in Niassa is carried out by the Lipilichi Wilderness company’s Chipanje Cheto project and has modern processing equipment to produce more than 250 litres of honey per day to international quality and hygiene standards.
Project manager Howard Hunter encouraged local communities to engage more in the production of honey, saying that his company was available to provide technical support to anyone interested in investing in the profitable activity.
