The district of Mocímboa da Praia in Cabo Delgado province registered intense fighting between government forces and insurgents operating in that region of Mozambique last Saturday.
President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi confirmed the incidents in a speech on the 46th anniversary of the Lusaka Agreements, which ended the war against Portuguese colonialism.
“The day before yesterday (Saturday), they was a major engagement in the area of Mocimboa da Praia and the junction of Awasse. Day in and day out, [the Defence Forces] are the representatives and successors of the national liberation struggle combatants,” President Nyusi said.
So far, there are no further details of last Saturday’s fighting.
Regarding the situation in northern Cabo Delgado, Filipe Nyusi suggested that Renamo guerrillas help combat the insurgents, saying he had broached the matter in conversation with former Renamo guerrillas involved in the demobilization, demilitarization and reintegration (DDR) process, which took another step forward on Saturday,
“I spoke with those guerrillas and even asked a group of ladies if they would be willing to support the young people who are fighting in the centre and north of the country. They made themselves available, despite wishing to go and rebuild their lives, after such a long time.”
Nyusi also wants veterans of the national liberation struggle to inspire the young people serving on the front line.
