The Mocímboa da Praia aerodrome, in Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, was reopened on Monday to international traffic, after completion of work to improve the runway, taxiways, lighting, signalling and communications and other interventions that cost 24 million meticals (US$390,000).
The Minister of Transport and Communications, Carlos Mesquita, who presided over the ceremony, said that “the government will not reduce the points of entry,” as the resizing of the number of air entry points is under discussion in Mozambique.
The Mocímboa da Praia aerodrome will be used for cargo aircraft operations that, according to Mesquita, will create numerous opportunities for local development, make it easier to provide assistance to people in emergencies and ensure the integrated development of the entire air transport chain in terms of tourism and fishing.
Mozambican daily newspaper Notícias reported that the Mocímboa da Praia aerodrome should address the concerns of tour operators, who previously needed to go to Pemba for official border formalities, which could make services more competitive and in terms of fishing it will allow operators to expand their business by exporting fresh seafood.
