The major general and commander of the government forces in Cabo Delgado said that 2021 should be a decisive year in the fight against armed groups in that northern province of Mozambique.
“2021 should be the decisive year to resolve the problem we have. We have to annihilate the invaders,” said Eugénio Mussa, quoted on Monday by Televisão de Moçambique.
The major general was speaking during a military parade on Sunday in Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique.
Eugénio Mussa said the government forces must act “rigorously”, definitively destroying the armed groups that have been carrying out attacks in the region for three years.
“We cannot continue with this unresolved,” stressed the commander of the government forces, who also criticised the disinformation generated by people on social media.
The armed violence in Cabo Delgado began three years ago and is causing a humanitarian crisis with more than 2,000 deaths and 560,000 displaced people, without housing or food, mainly concentrated in the provincial capital, Pemba.
Some of the incursions have been claimed by the ‘jihadist’ Islamic state group since 2019.
This month, the Southern African Development Community will meet to discuss the security situation in the region.
