A man whose identity has not yet been ascertained was burnt to death by a mob in the early hours of Monday morning in Matola-Gare, Maputo province, because he was supposedly part of a group of thieves operating in the area.
The unrecognizable body was found near the railway line in the middle of a road giving access to the neighbourhood. His assailants left a machete next to the body, but it is not known whether this was used during robberies or to hit him with prior to his death.
The case took place in the neighbourhood’s Block 1, but residents of Matola-Gare in its entirety have been calling for tighter security in response to the wave of burglaries and assaults on public transportation at night.
According to residents, several suspected thieves have been lynched in the neighbourhood in recent days as a result of the anger caused by criminal activity in the area.
