Interior Minister Jaime Basílio Monteiro is going to Lisbon this week to discuss the case of the Portuguese businessman kidnapped last July and missing since.
According to the journal Público, after seven months of silence and three weeks without responding to a letter from President Marcelo on the missing businessman, Mozambican head of state Filipe Nyusi is finally sending a minister to Lisbon.
According to the source mentioned above, Maputo’s unusual silence has generated deep unease in the Portuguese state.
According to Público, Jaime Basílio Monteiro will arrive in Lisbon on Wednesday and is expected to meet the President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister António Costa in separate meetings,
There are dozens of theories circulating in both Mozambique and Portugal about the circumstances and possible motivations of the kidnappers, some of them seeing the abduction in a political setting, others in an economic.
According to Público, it is not known what Minister Jaime Basílio Monteiro is going to say about the case of the Portuguese agriculture sector businessman kidnapped in Beira. Just as any political reading of the Mozambican state’s opting to sending a minister in person rather than a letter is unclear.
