The Miss University Africa 2017 beauty pageant is almost upon us again – after a potential derailment for this year’s Lagos, Nigeria venue in the wake of the Boko Haram school children kidnappings, the good news is that the the pan-continental beauty pageant has been taken off hold and the contestants are now ready and waiting to compete next month!
Miss University Africa was started in 2010 and is the only competition of its kind, where students from 54 African countries participate. Last year’s winner was Miss Kenya but this year a strong field of candidates are contesting, with Miss University Mozambique, Liana Loforte, already in with a fighting chance!
Liana, who also a part-time dance instructor and is setting up her own nail and beauty business in Maputo, had a chance to chat to Club of Mozambique this weekend. I asked her about why she is running and what she hopes to do if successful:
”For me it is the opportunity to interact with 54 women from all the countries in Africa and share our culture and knowledge, which will be a once in a lifetime experience” said Liana. Turning to her ambitions, Mozambique’s candidate continued: ”If I win I will have the opportunity to become Ambassador for Students at the United Nation and with that position I will do my best to fight for education rights for underprivileged girls in Africa.”
No mean goals for the young catwalk debutante entering her first ever international beauty contest. Liana also has aspirations for her country and for young women more generally – I asked her, why she thought the competition is important for Africa and for Mozambique? Liana replied:
”Having a pageant that is based on the intelligence of African women is a way to promote how strong the female brain is and to elevate the standards of what is perceived to be beautiful.” Words that surely resonate with every ambitious woman in Africa.
Voting by Facebook and Instagram to qualify as one of the 10 finalists to go to Nigeria is already underway, with every ‘Like’ counting towards the final decision as to who will qualify – so support Mozambique’s candidate (on the Miss University Africa official website only) and help send Liana to Lagos to represent us next month!
