A 14-year-old escaped kidnapping last Sunday in the village of Nhamaiabuè, Mutarara district, Tete province, when his group of three captors released him on the Dona Ana railway bridge.
Mutarara administrator Lucas Muidingue confirmed the details on Thursday, explaining that the minor escaped thanks to a tip-off. Police immediately tracked down and chased the alleged abductors, who fled when they noticed the presence of undercover police officers.
According to Muidingue, when the kidnappers – from Nhamapandza, Marínguè district, Sofala – noticed the PRM agents on the Dona Ana Bridge, they ran to their car and drove off to an unknown destination.
“PRM agents rescued the minor, who is already with his relatives,” Muidingue said. “The boy said that his kidnappers had promised him a job in Beira city where he would be paid 3,000 meticais a month.
This is the first thwarted abduction registered in the district this year.
The kidnappers, Muidingue further elaborated, were taking advantage of the unusual movement of people registered on the days when passenger trains from Beira in Sofala to Moatize in Tete pass by.
“We call on neighbourhoods and communities to beware of people who make false promises, such as employment and high wages. When there is a lot of movement [of people] we had better take care of our children,” the Mutarara administrator cautioned.
