Mozambique Elections: Police fire tear gas to disperse protesters in Maputo

At a time when the country’s attention is focused on preventing and combating the Covid-19 pandemic, from the Ministry of Transport and Communication (MTC) on Mártires de Inhaminga Avenue comes news fit to leave citizens bearing the brunt of the high cost of living on their skins completely scandalised, ‘Carta de Moçambqiue’ reports today.
For the Ministry of Transport and Communication, led by Janfar Abdulai, has decided to bestow new sports equipment worth around 349,000 meticais [around US$5,131 at current exchange rates] on the players of the ministry’s football team.
The supplier is Sidat Sport, Lda, a company belonging to the Sidat clan, and the award notice, according to the public announcement published in the most widely circulated morning newspaper, Jornal Notícias, reporting that Sidat Sport, Lda is the winner of tender 45ª000141 / CC / 13/20 with the proposal budgeted at 349,303.50 Mts.
The equipment is for the ministry’s football team to participate in recreational football, and is being purchased at a time when sporting competitions in most modalities remain suspended worldwide as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The announcement of the acquisition of sports equipment comes after Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário, while swearing into office the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries on the 4th of April, urged cadres to implement measures that contribute to prevention and combat of corruption. “Good management of financial and patrimonial resources” were the PM’s watchwords.
Do Rosário said that the Permanent Secretaries must observe mechanisms of internal control, management systems, inspection, accountability and accountability in order to safeguard excellence in the management of public affairs.
It should be noted that, for the current financial year, the Executive of Filipe Nyusi approved a budget with an estimated deficit of 109,791.5 million Mts. At the time of the approval of the State Budget, the Government said that it counted on the help of international partners to cover the deficit. Public expenditure is fixed at 345,381.8 million Mts.
