The Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Leite Couto Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding in Maputo on Wednesday to support production of literary works by the institution named after writer Mia Couto’s father.
The protocol, signed by Minister Silva Dunduro and the president of the foundation, Mia Couto, will facilitate the distribution of literary works by sharing costs with the ministry.
According to Dunduro, the move is an excellent way to support Mozambican culture and ensure the formation of world citizens.
”This development is very significant for our ministry. The partnership is a very prestigious one, and we are hopeful that through it, we will make sure books reach more and more people,” Dunduro said.
Mia Couto said that the protocol was the formalization of ongoing cooperation between the two institutions.
“This agreement establishes a more concise picture with regard to areas where the foundation has some intervention. This is support which we will be able to count on,” Couto said.
To Couto, investment in culture is necessary because, ”in a society, the economy may falter, the politics may fluctuate, but culture is always constant”.
