Minister of Public Works and Housing and Water Resources João Osvaldo Machatine has suggested that TRAC, the concessionaire of the Maputo/Witbank EN4, considers fencing off critical sections of the road to reduce the number of accidents involving pedestrians there.
Machatinetook the opportunity of a visit to work currently underway on the EN4 to convey to TRAC managers the government’s concern with road safety, urging the concessionaire to invest more in assistance to the victims of accidents.
Machatine referred to pedestrians regularly being run over although there are pedestrian bridges in areas where the road crosses densely populated residential areas.
Machatine told journalists considered that TRAC was an example of how a concession should work, adding that the government was interested in replicating the good EN4 practices in other concessioned roads.
TRAC representative Fenias Mazive said that work in progress includes the installation of an “almost insurmountable” central separator, and mentioned the possibility of putting up fences on the side of the road at accident black spots.
Mazive also welcomed Minister Machatine’s proposal to install fixed radars speed cameras.
