“It is important for me, during my stay in Mozambique, to meet former contract workers who lived and worked in Germany until the fall of communism, based on an agreement between their country and the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Their biographies are an essential part of German-Mozambican relations,” said Katja Keul in a press release dated Sunday (03-12).
Katja Keul arrived in Mozambique this Monday (04-12), and will remain until Thursday, December 7. She is scheduled to meet government representatives and visit parliament in Maputo, exchanging views on political and social developments in Mozambique.
A conversation in Maputo with ‘madhjermans’ (former Mozambican workers in the GDR) is also planned.
Keul’s programme also includes meetings with representatives of civil society and non-governmental organisations, as well as a visit to the national electricity supplier, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), Germany’s most important partner in Mozambique’s energy sector.
Cabo Delgado visit
The German minister of state will also have the opportunity to talk to representatives of the European Union Training Mission (EUTM), who work with the Mozambican armed forces, with the aim of better understanding the security situation in the province of Cabo Delgado, which she will visit.

In Cabo Delgado, Minister Keul will meet representatives of the local administration and foreign troops deployed to protect the local population.
“The Federal Foreign Affairs Office supports the United Nations in its efforts to stabilise the region. During my visit, I would like to speak with representatives of the EU training mission and other experts, as well as local representatives, about the security situation and the possibilities of stabilising the region,” Keul stressed.
“Mozambique is a priority country for our development cooperation and an important partner in combating climate change. Mozambique is already seriously affected by the consequences of the climate crisis and has increasingly faced natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes in recent years. We remember, for example, Cyclone Freddy, in March this year, which hit southeast Africa with devastating consequences,” Katja Keul said.
“We therefore want to work closely with Mozambique in the fight against the consequences of the climate crisis,” she concluded.
CDD received today, 4 December, a courtesy visit from Her Excellency @KatjaKeul, Minister of State of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Ambassador Ronald Münch.
