The process of selecting contractors and inspectors for 687 construction and rehabilitation tasks in the education sector, creating conditions for the return to face-to face classes, has already been completed.
Now, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources has demanded integrity and quality in the execution of the works, warning that contractors may be excluded from the process in case of non-compliance.
The 21 contractors and 10 construction inspectors have three months to complete the rehabilitation of school bathrooms and the installation of water supply systems in school buildings.
Quality standards, Minister Machatine warned, would serve as a test for national contractors, given that 90% of the works had been entrusted to domestic companies.
This was seen as an opportunity to generate liquidity flow into the private sector, martyred for four months by the devastating impact of COVID-19.
For the money to reach even more companies, those awarded are allowed to subcontract up to 70% of the work.
Seventy-five tenders from 45 companies competed for the contracts, of which 21 were selected.
During the second state of emergency period, President Nyusi identified pre-primary and primary education as at the highest risk of contamination, and determined that classes at these levels would only resume once hygiene conditions were met.
The education sector now awaits the completion of these works for the recommencement of face-to-face classes.
