Underlining the army’s continued involvement in food production, Mozambique’s Minister of Defence, Atanásio Mtumuke has threatened to dismiss military commanders who do not submit agricultural production plans for their units within 20 days.
“This issue cannot be ignored. We want to see, within the next 20 days, concrete plans and realistic production targets submitted to the Ministry of National Defence at the level of the General Staff,” said Mtumuke, quoted by the newspaper O País.
Speaking at the closing of the XVII Coordinating Council of the Ministry of Defense, Mtumuke said that the order is aimed at complying with an order from President Filipe Nyusi, who last week defended the need for the Armed Forces of Defence of Mozambique (FADM) to engage in productive activities.
“Inertia, convenience, a culture of the extended hand should definitely not be carried over into 2017 nor form part of the defence sector’s vocabulary,” said Mtumuke, repeating a message President Nyusi had already been given that FADM must become “more proactive”.
Commanders who do not comply with the targets, the Minister of Defence continued, should not wait to be fired by the Ministry of National Defence or the General Staff, but should, on their own initiative, make their posts available.
