Mozambique: Call for "no panic, no mpox disinformation", to prevent discrimination against ...
Mozambique still lacks sufficient donated blood to satisfy demand at the main country’s main health facilities.
As the country celebrated National Blood Donor Day this Wednesday, health authorities were calling for increased blood donations, with Health Minister Nazira Abdula announcing that reserves were below recommended levels.
“We are asking everyone to continue donating blood,” the minister said, quoted by Radio Mozambique.
Each year, 136,000 450-ml units of blood are collected in Mozambique, against the 200,000 recommended by the World Health Organisation for a country this size. About half of that amount is provided by voluntary donors, the health minister said.
“Blood saves the lives of our mothers going through complicated deliveries and haemorrhaging,” she said, mentioning one of the most common instances where donations are needed.
The minister also highlighted the importance of blood transfusions for trauma patients, particularly victims of road accidents. And blood transfusions help patients suffering from life-threatening illnesses to live longer and enjoy better quality of life, and give hope to children with anaemia.
