Negotiations on minimum wage levels will resume by the end of June, when the parties meet to assess the economic development of the country, Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário announced on Wednesday.
“The poor performance of economic indicators and the low levels of production and productivity of the sectors recorded in the country as a result of Covid-19 had encouraged the Labour Advisory Commission to unanimously decide to temporarily suspend negotiations on updating the minimum wages,” the prime minister told parliament during a questions to the government session yesterday.
The prime minister also indicated that the deliberations of the Labour Consultative Commission were aimed, above all, at ensuring the continued operation of enterprises and maintaining jobs in a period when the country and the world were still battling the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The fixing of minimum wages is based on economic growth, inflation, productivity and competitiveness, including the financial robustness of companies in the different sectors of activity,” Carlos Agostinho do Rosário reiterated in response to one of the five questions put to the executive by the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) parliamentary bench.
