MozParks develops and manages this internship programme which was created in March 2018. It was renamed as Mimi Niko Kazi Youth Employment Programme in March 2021. Mimi Niko Kazi means “I am at work” in Swahili and represents the core essence of the project which is to give young women and men in Mozambique an opportunity to get their first professional experience and launch their careers.
The graduation ceremony took place on 8thth April 2022, in Xai-Xai City, Gaza Province. The Governor of the Gaza Province Margarida Mapanzene Chongo opened the graduation ceremony and saluted MozParks and Germany for supporting the youth employment program in the province through a paid internship. “The Government of Mozambique has youth employment as the main agenda during the government’s current mandate,” she addressed to the interns. The Governor asked them to implement all the knowledge acquired during their internship and value the opportunity given by the Mimi Niko Kazi Programme.
MozParks is very proud that Mimi Niko Kazi has reached Gaza Province, providing support to young professional talents, giving them practical employability skills and broadening their career perspectives. This programme facilitates a successful transition from education to work by matching young qualified talents with employer demand. The 16 internships in Gaza were hosted by TMCEL, Fipag, Gaza Licores and EDM, who trained the interns on the job for the last 6 months. All 16 internships were financed by the “Employment 4 Development” initiative implemented by GIZ and sponsored by Germany, UE, Norway and Sasol.
MozParks not only administers the MNK Programme but also hosts internships. So do its partners, 100 companies in 7 provinces in Mozambique, who provide on-the-job training for the MNK Programme beneficiaries.
Currently 30% of all internships take place outside of Maputo City and Maputo Province and MozParks is aiming to increase this number in the close future. Since March 2021 the MNK programme has found internships for over 300 young people, 45% of them women. More than half of the MNK interns find permanent employment after the end of their internship.
“This programme is an efficient way to respond to youth unemployment and empower young professionals in remote places of our country,” says Onorio Manuel, the MozParks General Director. “MozParks is inviting donors and partners to participate in this project and actively contribute to the sustainable youth development in Mozambique,“ he adds.
