Police yesterday raided a residence in Maputo’s Luis Cabral neighbourhood and seized military equipment used by criminals to terrorize residential neighbourhoods, reports Notícias.
The seized “military equipment” consisted of “military uniforms and propaganda material identical to Renamo’s,” Notícias reports, along with “walkie-talkies, flashlights, uniforms and reflective vests from security company G4S.”
According to Maputo police commander Rafael, it is believed that this house was used to plan and coordinate the attacks that used the machete to dominate residential areas of the capital.
“We worry about the link between the group which terrorised Maxaquene with machetes and this residence. We are concerned that the material found includes the Renamo and security company G4S uniforms. We have already notified G4S.
“It was here that the destabilization of neighbourhoods like Maxaquene was planned. We must remember that one of the machete criminals detained some time ago in Maxaquene was a Renamo member,” the commander said.
General Bernardino repeated his appeal to the population to maintain their vigilance, adding that the discovery of the equipment in the house had been thanks to collaboration between the police and the community.
The owner of the house is on the run and being actively sought by police looking for an explanation for the presence of the paramilitary material.
