Assumane Amisse is a 13-year-old boy who lives in the Quirimba district in Cabo Delgado province. His education was interrupted when he and his family were forced by the armed conflict to leave their village of Nauenda in Macomia district.
Assumane tried to continue his studies in Quirimba, but the difficulty of reintegrating into the study environment, combined with the lack of school materials, forced him to abandon his studies again.
Only with recovery classes through an accelerated learning system implemented within the scope of the CUIDA project did Assumane find the impetus he needed.
CUIDA is implemented by AVSI in partnership with UNICEF and with financial support from USAID Mozambique and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Mozambique. CUIDA (“Care”) supports children and families affected by armed conflict, with a focus on child protection, education and nutrition.
It has already supported around 4,300 children in the same circumstances as Assumane.
Today, Assumane attends Grade 4 at the Quirimba Primary School. He can read and write perfectly. Regarding his future, Assumane has no doubts: “I want to be a doctor,” he says.
