The Renamo leader claims that mediators in the dialogue between himself and the president are to arrive by Mozambique on Monday 11 July, but added that no date has been set for the meeting between the two.
In a telephone call to the STV television station, Afonso Dhlakama quoted Jose Manteigas, the head of the Renamo negotiating team, as saying that “it is expected that the mediators will be in Mozambique by the 11th [July], and all that is lacking is the exact date of the start of negotiations”.
Dhlakama acknowledged that Renamo and the government were committed to achieving agreement on the end of fighting and political tension in the country.
As for attacks on military and civilian vehicles in central Mozambique attributed to armed Renamo men, Dhlakama confined himself to repeating that his party has been defending itself from the assaults by the Defence and Security Forces.
“It is Frelimo that is coming 1,500 kilometres to bomb us here in the centre of the country,” Afonso Dhlakama asserted.
The two sides have been accusing each other of attacks for several months, with military clashes causing the exodus of about 9,000 people to Malawi, and many others fleeing residential areas.
Agricultural production, tourism and investment have also been affected by the political and military tension in the country.
