The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) yesterday demanded the resignation of Nampula mayor Mahamudo Amurane and his team.
There is a very public divorce between Mahamudo Amurane, mayor of Nampula, and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the party which supported his candidacy in the 2013 elections.
The mayor however has already announced that he is not an MDM candidate and promises the formation of a new party to contest the 2018 elections, while the MDM has said that it will have removed him from office by December.
MDM members took advantage of Nampula’s 61st anniversary festivities to publicly demand that the mayor and his team resign.
“Who rules here is the MDM Power-grabbers. traitors, robbers, exploiters and thieves – all out!” MDM delegate Luciano Tarieque shouted in the presence of the public, the mayor, provincial government officials and other guests.

“We, as the MDM, say loudly that his [Mahamudo Amurane’s] days are numbered: he will be out of power. He has violated the laws of political parties, municipalities and the civil service,” Tarieque explained.
“Misaligned”
Since late last year, the mayor of Nampula has at odds with Daviz Simango’s party, allegedly because the MDM leader is interfering in governance and supporting his defamation.
“I would like to say that, with this support [of the people], I am encouraged to run for another term in 2018. However, as I have stated in all my speeches, my re-election, for obvious reasons, will not be as MDM candidate, but representing another political force that I will announce in due course, exercising my right to political freedom,” he said.
New party
To run for a second term, Amurane has reportedly created a political party called the Liberal Democratic Party of Mozambique (PLDM), but has avoided public comment on the subject.
Tarieque however says Amurane’s announcement does not intimidate the MDM, which he believes will win the elections.
“We are planning how to win in places like Nacala, Ilha de Moçambique, Malema, Ribáuè and Angoche, and to renew our mandate in Nampula,” he said.
