The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the country’s third-largest political party, confirmed on Thursday that it would field Daviz Simango as its candidate for president of Mozambique in the general elections of October 15, in compliance with the organisation’s 2017 congress decision.
“Clearly the congress has decided [that Daviz Simango is the MDM candidate],” MDM National Council spokesman Moisé Chechene said, referring to the meeting scheduled to last until Sunday in the city of Beira, central Mozambique.
Chechene said that the MDM National Council and the National Political Commission, also meeting in Beira, would confirm Simango candidature.
Speaking of the general election census, Chechene said he thought the process had been marked by irregularities, “some routine”, he maintained, but without giving specific examples.
The MDM National Council and National Policy Commission would approve the election manifesto and also consider the effects of Cyclones Idai and Kenneth in the centre and north of the country.
Daviz Simango has been a mayor of Beira, one of Mozambique’s largest cities, since 2003. This will be the third time he has run for president, having stood in 2009 and 2014.
